Understanding your work rights on a student visa (subclass 500)

Important info for all student visa holders:

Work limits:

  • You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during semester
  • Unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks
  • Your course must have started before you can begin working

Your rights:

  • You’re entitled to minimum wage (currently $23.23/hour)
  • Employers MUST pay you superannuation if you earn over $450/month
  • You have the same workplace rights as Australian citizens

Red flags to watch for:

  • Cash-in-hand payments (often means underpayment)
  • Being asked to work more than your visa allows
  • Employers asking you to pay for your own training
